A Great and Terrible Day

On April 2 my sister Breya went into the hospital to have her fourth baby.  I was waiting by the phone to hear her great news when my dad called and gave a very different and terrible kind of news.  While walking in the neighborhood and waiting to go to the hospital to see her new grandbaby, my mom was hit by a car.  The driver was blinded by the early morning sun and hit my mom from behind, throwing her onto the hood of the car and then out into the street.  It broke her neck and injured her spinal cord, miraculously not severing it.  She was immediately rushed to the hospital where my dad and brother met her and gave her a blessing.  That evening she was taken into surgery to fuse two vertebrae in her neck and relieve the pressure on her spine.  We didn't hear much news about her all day and it was horrible and scary.  She was in the ICU for a week and on so many tubes, IVs, pain medicines, and a feeding tube.  She was then moved to a regular room in the hospital and then onto the physical therapy floor with the tubes and IVs slowly, slowly being removed.  She had hours of grueling therapy relearning how to move, control her limbs, and walk every day followed by aches and pains she had never felt before.  Bad days, and worse days and after 15 1/2 weeks she finally went home.  She is in a wheelchair at home, continuing her therapies in and out of the pool and getting stronger walking.  This has been such a long, incredibly hard road and I can't wait for her to reach the end of it.  We are so beyond lucky and grateful that her life was saved.  It could have been an entirely different phone call my dad had to make that day.  I love you Mom and continue to pray for you everyday.  You have been so strong and oh how I wish you didn't have to go through this.
I flew out to see her a week after the accident.  I couldn't seem to get there fast enough to see and touch her with my own eyes and hands.  Erick so willingly took time off of work and watched the girls while I went and sat by her hospital bed every day for a week.

Friends and family were so thoughtful and she had several new flower arrangements, cards, and candies sent everyday.

Adele loved to sit by her in her bed
Her therapy schedule.  I took a picture of it so I could remember what she was doing during the day.
Baby Sophia born on the same day

My dad had a ramp built so she could wheel right into their house and another one so she can go out on the back deck
Dipping her toes in at Red Fish Lake

Here are some of the things Erick did with the girls while I was gone

They went fishing and Lily caught a fish!

They built a tree house.  More pics of the finished house to come.
He mastered doing girl hair

Oh my word! What a terrible thing- but like you said- how blessed that her life was spared. I hope for a continued speedily healing for her! I am also very impressed with your hubby's talents of doing girl hair and taking those little darlings fishing (love that they are all fancied up) so cute!!! You have an adorable family and I love being able to see them through your blog!

So glad your mom is doing better. It was so cool to see her walk at the reunion. Hopefully she just continues to get better and better. And I love Lily's fishing outfit!

That is so hard. And I know your Mom likes to stay busy and is so crafty...I can't imagine what a trial it has been for her to have to be so still and focus on herself and her recovery instead of taking care of all the people she loves. It's scary how quickly our lives can be changed! But it's wonderful to know that Heavenly Father is at the helm and when everything is all said and done, our trials make us stronger and more like Him. I'm glad she is healing and slowly getting better :)

Megan, I can't believe that your family has gone through so much lately. I am so glad to hear that you were able to go see your mom and of course, Erick looked like he did a great job as Mr. Mom. I hope and pray that your mom's full health can return. And baby Sophia is lovely. One more thing, we got a very cute picture of baby Beau in the mail. : ) Thank you for thinking to send us one!
